In the early hours of June 6, 1944, Allied forces stormed the Normandy coast in a daring invasion that turned the tide of World War II. The assault was met with withering fire from a determined enemy–yet, wave after wave, they pressed on through smoke, sand, and chaos. Freedom hung in the balance, and victory came at a great cost. On June 6, 1944, more than 150,000 Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy in the largest seaborne invasion in history. Waves of men battled their way inland at Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword beaches. More than 2,000 Americans lost their lives in the D-Day landings alone, with thousands more perishing in ensuing operations.
